Although, oil is a natural secretion of the scalp which functions to keep your hair healthy and strong, but too much oil is a result of an excessive production and due to not using proper products to maintain your hair. Oily hair can also emerge due to other reasons such as hormonal changes, excessive stress, oily food or poor hair care. Oily hair looks heavy-looking and unmanageable which clumps together , and our hair becomes more prone to dandruff and itchiness. As having oily hair can look lifeless and dirty, its important you start looking for treatments to take better care of your hair so you can look your best all the time. A method to prevent oily hair is to keep your scalp clean. Or you can use dry shampoo or shampoo powder as an alternative to shampooing everyday which can provide you with stronger and healthier hair. We have listed down a series of home remedies you can use to remove the grease from your hair and keep them healthy and strong:

Other Remedies To Use

  • Shampoo the right way

When it comes to shampooing, one of the mistakes people make is when they scrub their scalp hard, which will only irritate the scalp and make the oily hair problem even worse. According to hair experts: “Oily hair should be shampooed only once, not rubbing or scrubbing the scalp too much but concentrating on the hair shaft.”

  • Condition sparingly

If your hair gets greasy and oily by the end of the day, its best to prevent using conditioner as it will only coat it with more oil. The natural oils in the scalp will act as a conditioner. Adding conditioner will just leave the hair with an oilier, limp appearance. If you have long hair which is more prone to split ends, then only use conditioner on the ends of your hair.

  • Apply astringent

Another way of preventing oily hair is by applying a homemade astringent on your scalp. According to experts, mix equal parts of witch hazel and mouthwash and use a cotton pad to dab it on your scalp. The witch hazel acts to reduce oil and the mouthwash consists of antiseptic properties which can reduce the oil proportion. Use it before shampooing your hair.

  • Dry hair in the opposite direction from which it grows

Left on its own, oily hair tends to be limp and lank. To coax more fullness into it, be creative with your blow-drying technique. Use a brush to lift the hair up at the roots, or bend forward at the waist and gently brush your hair up over the top of your head.
